Introduction to Paddling an Open Canoe

Looking to explore inland water by canoe? Want to develop your skills in paddling and steering? Our introductory course will provide all you need to get started in an open canoe. The introductory evening will included a short presentation on the open canoe and introduce the key concepts of coordination and communication. Time will then be taken to discuss equipment needed for the following day.

Having met your coach at the agreed location, you will then spend a day being introduced to, and coached, in the skills of paddling, steering, and turning your canoe efficiently. We will also cover lifting, carrying and attaching a canoe to a roof-rack. The course participants will be divided into doubles crews and have the opportunity to paddle in both bow and stern. Depending on wind conditions, there may also be opportunities to experience paddling solo.

The coaching you receive will help set you on the road to exploring Scotland’s waterways independently. All our open canoe and kayak course prices include the use of any specialist equipment that participants may not yet own (canoes, kayaks, spraydecks, buoyancy aids and paddles).
