Winter GPS
The GPS (Global Positioning System) is sometimes believed to be the modern answer to treasure hunting and sometimes gets overhyped, but it has a genuine role to play in winter navigation. However, while the handsets are getting better all the time, they can only ever be as good as the person whose hands they’re in!
Can you use it in winter... correctly?
Would you like to find out? GPS should never be used on its own in a mountain environment, but learning to use it along with conventional navigational aids such as map and compass is an essential mountain skill.
Our winter courses begin on a Friday evening where we’ll introduce you to the benefits of using GPS and Memory Map software. Following a 2 hour hands-on workshop, we’ll head outdoors the next day for an authentic taste of winter GPS training on the hill.
For winter GPS courses it’s essential to prepare for a winter day; you’ll need winter kit such as four season boots, crampons and an ice axe plus robust winter clothing.
GPS sets are supplied free of charge for the day and additional winter kit can be hired (see Equipment hire section). This course combines an opportunity to get to grips with GPS in a practical way, with stacks of great input from very experienced outdoor GPS trainers.
