Until April 2000 the closest I had come to ski mountaineering was being led with another dozen hung-over Scots down the Vallee Blanche by your typical French guide. Don't get me wrong, it was exciting and on one or two occasions I did feel like James Bond, but I was still one of a gaggle wearing an 80's ski jacket - say no more.
