TISO HELPS POLAR EXPLORERS INTO RECORD BOOKS

Trans-Greenland-3.jpgCongratulations to Tiso sponsored explorers Alex Hibbert, 21 and George Bullard, 19 who broke into the Record Books this July after completing their unsupported 1400 mile Tiso Trans-Greenland expedition. The record is for the longest, fully unsupported polar expedition in history, using manpower only and with no opportunity to re-supply en-route. Tiso are delighted to have helped the boys achieve their goal and in doing so raise money and awareness for Breast Cancer Haven .

For 4 months the pair travelled together battling the extreme arctic environment of Greenland, experiencing temperatures dropping to below –40. Tiso provided much of the specialist equipment for the trip as well as support and advice for the young explorers. With only 2 sledges, but each weighing over 160kg, and surviving on 5500 calories per day, the right clothing and equipment was absolutely essential.

Alex and George are delighted to have completed the Tiso sponsored expedition successfully. “We are both thrilled at everything we have achieved, although since we finished it feels like all we have done is eat and sleep!” explains Alex. “It’s quite strange to be back with other people, with proper food and all mod cons.  For the last 113 days it’s just been George and I, and for safety we have never been more than 25ft away from each other - even when nature calls!”

Trans-Greenland-4.jpgTiso Group Chief Executive, Chris Tiso comments “I am very proud to have supported Alex and George in the adventure. Tiso have been involved in expeditions before, but it is fantastic to be part of such a challenging, record-breaking journey. They are an inspiration to people of all ages, not just the younger generation. Tiso have always been associated with the spirit of adventure, and we’ll continue to support the new generation of explorers. I can’t wait to hear all their amazing stories.”

The duo travelled from the East of Greenland to the West and back again. With a finite supply of food and fuel, the challenge was to reach the east coast before either ran out. Alex, who planned the expedition throughout his time at university, wanted to get ‘back to basics’ with the epic trip. “I wanted to have the same philosophy and spirit of adventure that great explorers like Scott, Shackleton and Nansen. The inaccessibility has been an incredible challenge, but we have seen some amazing sights, and had some life changing experiences that make all the hard work so rewarding.”

The last couple of weeks were, understandably, the toughest with rations critically low, living on a couple of flapjacks a day. With little calories it was adrenaline, determination and the prospect of finishing that kept them going.
