About The Stumpjumper:
Back in the depths of time (early 1980s) Specialized created the first mass production mountain bike, the Stumpjumper, a bike which introduced numerous riders to the joys of off-road riding. Fast forward almost 40 years and it's fair to say technology has come on a bit. One thing remains the same though: the Stumpjumper is still opening up riders' perceptions of what is possible on a bike.
For 2019, the Stumpjumper is back with an up-to-the-minute design capable of taking on some seriously tough trails and giving you plenty of ear-to-ear smiles. The carbon fibre frame is designed with stiffness and strength in mind. Stiffness in the right areas can increase power transfer and control by giving you more direct feedback from the trail, and pushing every watt into forward motion. Up front, stiffness translates to more precise steering and stability, especially when crashing over rocks and roots.
The asymmetric deisgn around the rear shock adds significant strength in this area, allowing for a much more direct suspension action. The party piece of the Stumpjumper is the SWAT storage area. This little compartment sits under the bottle cage on the downtube and allows you to store tools, spares and snacks without loading down jersey pockets or adding more kit to a bulging pack. Simple, and very effective. A threaded bottom bracket is a big step towards reliability - this is a much more user friendly system than pressfit BBs, can be easily worked on at home, and generally last longer too.
Other frame features include a unique ridged chainstay protector which dampens noice and chain movement for quieter ridiing and smoother pedalling. Internal cable routing is sleek, and with full runs inside the frame, is another feature designed to aid the home mechanic. Space for a 3.0" tyre means you can go as large as you like, depending on your preference for bump-eating rubber or flat out speed.
Geometry can make or break a bike, and thankfully the Stumpjumper is bang-up-to-date. The 66.5 degree head angle with 51mm offset fork creates a healthy 107mm of trail. What does that mean? Simply put, it means, stability at high speeds, agility at slow speeds, less nervousness, more confidence and generally intuitive handling. It isn't the most radical or conservative of geometries, it just works, and it'll work perfectly for the vast majority of riders.
Put all that tech together with 29" wheels, a custom tuned Fox shock with 140mm of travel, 150mm travel fork and chunky 2.6" tyres and you've got a trail slaying beast. The carbon frame keeps the weight down while the geometry, suspension and tyres keep the capability high. Want to race enduros? Go right ahead. Want to go on day-long horizon-exploring adventures? Absolutely. A mountaiin bike for riding any trail, anywhere? You won't find better.
The Stumpjumper is the real deal: a mountain bike for mountain bikers.
