About The MegaTower:
This is a Big Day Brawler. Big travel, big capabilities for big terrain and fearless riders.
Santa Cruz are characterised by their VPP suspension, and the MegaTower is no different. The dual rotating links act together to create a bottomless feel to the rear suspension so that no matter how big that jump, when you land you won't fell any harsh bottom-out, just pure control. But VPP isn't just about big hits, it's about effiency too. The design, in concjunction with a highly tuneable Rockshox Super Deluxe Select+, is initally supple but getting progressively stiffer. This provides grips when climbing without bobbing around when negotiating rocky steps and roots. All together, it's an efficient and massively smooth platform that's well suited to a bike of this capability.
Speaking of which, the MegaTower itself features 160mm of rear wheel travel and 29" wheels, putting it right in the enduro racing sweet spot. It means excellent momentum in rough terrain with the big wheels and suspension eating up rocks and roots with ease. Whether you actually race or not is up to you; what's true is that the MegaTower has serious ambition, so if you value speed and going as fast as you dare, look no further.
Geometry is as you'd expect for a bike of this nature. A 64.7 degree head angle and 76.4 degree seat angle allow for confident descentding and efficient climbing. A flipchip allows minor tweaking to this setup and can increase the wheelbase by 10mm for even more stability at speed. For the real downhillers out there, the frame is also compatible with a host of coil shocks for ultimate descending prowess. The MegaTower is designed around a short offset fork (42/44mm) which provides sharper handling than the head angle would have you believe, but doesn't sacrifice stability. As with any good mountain bike, it's a good all round balance.
Santa Cruz's carbon technology is one of the best in the mountain bike world. It isn't just ludicrously strong (check out this video for an example) it designed for easy maintenance too. Internal cables get their own internal sleeves for easy replacement; a threaded BB is easy to service by the home mechanic; anglular contact bearings again can be serviced by a competent mechanic without specialist tools. It's a seriously high quality piece of kit, with a lifetime warranty and a lifetime bearing warranty too.
This beast of a chassis is hooked up to some race-worthy components too. A 160mm travel Fox 36 fork provides front end traction and strength when bursting through rock gardens and hucking onto sketchy landings. The 29" carbon Reserve rims are wide, light and strong, and have their own warranty. Again, if you want to know how strong these are, check out this video from Danny Macaskill trying to break them. DT Swiss 370 hubs provide fast pickup for blasting out of corners and chunky Maxxis Assegai 2.5" tubeless tyres provide plenty of traction. SRAM's GX Eagle groupset takes care of shifting with minimal fuss, while Code R brakes with large 200mm rotors help you keep it together when things get wild. A finishing kit featuring Raceface bar and stem, Rockshox Reverb Stealth dropper post and WTB saddle complete a great looking package, all designed for going as fast as you dare.
The MegaTower is a real fun machine. With big travel and big wheels, it can more than hold its own on the toughest of terrain, and if you plan on racing enduros, you'd be hard pressed to find any bike more capable of getting you down the hill faster. It's a racers dream, but more than that, it's ready to bang out lap after lap on the toughest and fastest trails you can find. Really, go big or go home.
