Spending the Night at a Cannibal Cave with Guy Grieve...

Where scarier to spend a night in the outdoors than outside Sawney Bean’s Cave in Ayrshire?

Scotland is a country rich with history, legends and folklore, but it’s not all myths or stories of the Loch Ness Monster – sometimes it’s something distinctly darker and more human in nature.

Guy Grieve is a renowned writer and outdoorsman who has lived in the wilderness of Alaska, and here we joined him for a night at a cave infamous for its legend of the brutal and barbaric Sawney Bean and his cannibal family of 45 who preyed on unsuspecting travellers never to be seen again. This dark tale dates back to the 15th or 16th century when times were tough, and famine caused food shortages throughout the country.

Eerily isolated and nestled amongst the breathtaking Ayrshire coastline, Sawney Bean’s Cave is only accessible by foot and at certain times of the day when the tide goes out. On a contrastingly beautiful day of sunshine and blue skies, Tiso’s very own ghost hunters head into the cave with Guy, clambering over the boulder that partially blocks the entrance and venturing to its deepest, darkest depths where an ominous feeling lingers, so much so that even pigeons might give you a fright.

Whether you think there’s some truth to the cave’s legend, or believe it to be a grizzly tale that has been passed down through the ages – would you venture into the cave and explore further?
