TOUGH TRIVIA | FIVE QUESTIONS WITH JENNY TOUGH

This spring we've been lucky enough to have ultra-runner and endurance cyclist Jenny Tough speaking at our Outdoor Experience Events. Having run solo across 4 mountain ranges on 4 different continents, not to mention a host of epic cycle races all across the globe, Jenny is not only one of the top adventure athletes in the world, but also has plenty of good tales to tell. We sat down with Jenny to find out a little bit more about what makes her tick...

Who do you admire and why?

I don't really idolise any celebrities, but I actually get inspired by ordinary people who I meet on trails or in bothies who are taking on their own challenges and exploring the outdoors in their own ways. I meet people all the time who inspire me and push me on in my own challenges.

Which song gets you motivated and which helps you relax?

I could never disclose the full details of my running motivation playlist - it's just too embarrassing - but Fleetwood Mac Rumours has always been a go-to for when I need to make the hours slip by, or calm me down when the expedition is getting too stressful. I've depended on that album for many years!

What item could you not live without?

I'm very minimalist in my fast and light approach, so actually everything in my pack is something I literally couldn't live without, but my absolute favourite is my tuque (Canadian word for 'bobble hat'). I know the pompom is superfluous, but there's something so cosy about a good tuque on a cold night in the mountains that is totally worth the extra pack space!

What is the best training/exercise a runner or cyclist could do to improve their performance?

I started yoga a few years ago and it made a huge difference, literally adding days of extra running/riding to my year when I otherwise might have been held back recovering.

If you could spend 10 minutes with yourself 10 years ago, what advice or knowledge would you pass on?

I would try to convince me that I'm tougher than I think I am. I think I wasted a lot of years holding myself back because I didn't think I was capable of the things I dreamed of, and I wish I had known that everyone posses the ability to rise to the challenge.

A massive thanks to Jenny for her inspiring and entertaining talks at our events this spring. We wish you the best of luck for future adventures! Follow all Jenny's travels on Instagram or visit her website.
