How to choose a two-person tent

Planning some solo wild camping adventures or heading to the mountains with someone special? Lightweight, robust and dependable, two-person tents give you more space than their smaller counterparts – all while being just as easy to pack in your rucksack.

Before you head out on your first mission, it's worth knowing how to choose the right tent first. Three of the key features to consider on any two-man tent include:

·        Inner structure: All tent inners should be designed to maximise airflow for improved temperature regulation and breathability. If you're taking your new tent on an expedition, it's worth looking for lightweight materials like mesh.

·        Flysheet: As the outermost layer of your tent, the flysheet is arguably the most important part. Many tents use polyester, which is easier and cheaper to produce, while other use high-performance nylon. Some flysheets are also treated with waterproofing treatments, like silicone elastomer, and feature taped seams.

·        Pole material: Advanced one-man tents use lightweight aluminium poles, which offer enhanced durability and can be purchased in varying grades. Many tents use fibreglass poles, which are typically more cost-effective and easier to replace.

No matter whether you're using your new tent for regular weekend wild camping, solo backpacking or an upcoming expedition, the fundamental components will shape the success of your camping trips.

What to look for in a two-person tent

Durability

When you take good care of any camping gear, it could comfortably last you through the years. While a two-person tent makes no exception, it's still worth seeing it as an investment. It's sensible to choose high-quality materials built not only to withstand extreme weather but to stand the test of time.

If you plan to use your tent frequently, buying a high-end tent will deliver better performance than a basic one. Over time, you'll save money on repairs and inevitable replacement, too.

Waterproof rating

It's always worth checking the hydrostatic head (HH) rating on any tent. This is the most reliable indicator of just how water-repellent its flysheet will be. Waterproof tents typically start at around 1,500mm but the flysheet on a technical and lightweight two-man tent should be treated to at least 3,000mm.

If you need to be sure that you're buying a waterproof two-man tent, try to look for a rating of at least 3,000mm. Don't be put off a high-end tent with a lower waterproof rating, though; this is usually down to advanced lightweight materials.

Internal space

Remember that the size and shape of the internal space matters much more than just what your new two-man tent looks like on the outside. No matter how tall you are, sufficient head height is essential. You should try to choose a tent in which you can comfortably sit up straight: this makes almost everything else easier!

If you're planning a multi-day backpacking adventure, you'll need plenty of space to store your gear. Make sure that you can comfortably fit two sleeping mats inside the tent. Opting for a two-man tent with a porch gives you a handy place to leave your mucky boots, too.

Pitching time

When you buy a new tent, the supplied manufacturer's instructions should include details on how to pitch it and how long it takes. For family days on the beach, a two-man pop-up tent from Eurohike could be your best option. Technical tents may require slightly more time to put up correctly but, after a few tries, you'll be able to pitch like a pro.
