Down insulation
• Warmth-to-weight ratio: Excellent.
• Performance in wet conditions: Can lose its insulation ability when wet.
• Compressibility: Excellent, packs down very small.
• Durability: Very durable, can last for decades when cared for properly.
• Cost: Typically, more expensive than synthetic.
• Allergenicity: Can be an issue for those with allergies.
• Care: Requires special care for washing and drying.
• Best suited to: Cold, dry conditions; activities where weight and packability are paramount, e.g., mountaineering, backpacking.
Synthetic insulation
• Warmth-to-weight ratio: Good.
• Performance in wet conditions: Excellent, retains insulating properties when wet.
• Compressibility: Good, generally bulkier than down.
• Durability: Less durable, loses loft and warmth over time with repeated compression
• Cost: More affordable.
• Allergenicity: Hypoallergenic.
• Care: Easy to care for and machine washable.
• Best suited to: Wet conditions; high-output activities where you might sweat, e.g., skiing, hiking in the UK.
FAQs about padded coats
How do I wash my padded coat?
Down coat washing instructions
1. Brush off any dirt or marks.
2. Put the coat in the washing machine, with the zip and Velcro fastened, with a gentle detergent. Check the label for specific temperatures and guidance.
3. Once washed, tumble dry on a low heat with drying balls or cut-in-half tennis balls. This method will beat the down feathers so they puff back up.
4. Shake the jacket to avoid any clumping.
5. Re-proof your jacket. If you haven't used a wash-in treatment, apply water-resistant spray, such as a Durable Waterproof Repellent (DWR).
Synthetic coat washing instructions:
1. Again, brush off any dirt or mud.
2. Do up the zip and place the coat in the washing machine with a gentle detergent. Check the label for temperature recommendations, but typically no more than 30°C is recommended.
3. After washing, if you haven't used a wash-in treatment, apply a Durable Waterproof Repellent (DWR) spray.
4. Pop in the tumble dryer at a low heat. This will rejuvenate the fill power of the insulation.
5. Apply any treatment sprays.
How should I store my puffer coat?
Hanging in a wardrobe on a padded hanger helps to maintain the coat's shape. Plastic bags trap moisture, so use a cotton or canvas storage bag instead for protection and to let air circulate.
What does 'fill power' mean in terms of down jackets?
Fill power refers to the 'loft' of a down product. In other words, the quality and fluffiness of the down. The fill power is given a numerical value. A rough guide is:
• 550 - 650 = Good quality, suitable for everyday use.
• 700 - 800 = Excellent quality, great for serious cold-weather activities where you need warmth without bulk.
• 850+ = Premium/specialist grade, offering the best warmth-to-weight ratio available, ideal for ultralight mountaineering.
