What do terms like GORE-TEX®, Pertex® and Polartec® mean?

You'll come across these terms often when shopping for an outdoor coat. Here's a quick breakdown:

• GORE-TEX®: A highly durable, breathable, waterproof and windproof material often used for outdoor clothing. It can be applied to clothing using a GORE-TEX® treatment to keep clothes protected.

• Pertex®: Another durable material, with a focus on warmth that traps body heat within the material. Not all its technologies are waterproof, but they have excellent breathable functionalities.

• Polartec®: A fleece, knitted fabric made from premium polyester – a perfect mid-layer material that is a warm, comfortable alternative to natural wool.

What material is best for insulation?

Down and synthetic are the best materials to choose when looking for a warm outdoor coat.

Down refers to bird feathers, usually duck, within the padding of the coat. The feathers retain the body's natural warmth and are also lightweight. It isn't the best choice for wet conditions and may be a more expensive option than synthetic.

Synthetic insulation is a more environmentally friendly option than down, as the former contains polyester fibres, sometimes recycled, to retain warmth. And synthetics cope better with wet conditions than down.
