If you’re just starting out, there are a few important features to consider when choosing your new running gear. A moisture-wicking garment will move sweat away from your skin to keep you cool and dry, as well as preventing chafing, and a lot of garments will offer UPF+ protection, to shield your skin from harmful UV rays on bright, sunny days.

Other useful features may include small but convenient pockets to keep your keys or banks cards nearby, mesh panelling to ensure that air flow is maximised as you pick up the pace, thumbholes that increase coverage over your wrists and hands for extra warmth in place of gloves, and reflective detailing for running in low-light conditions to keep you visible to other road users.

If the trails are calling your name but the weather looks to be changeable, packable jackets or mid layers are often useful to take along for the ride – they will stash away compactly (sometimes into their own pocket) into a hip pack or backpack in the event that you need to put them on, or take them off!
