The Lowdown on Summit Series
The North Face Summit Series was first launched in the autumn of 2000 and has become a firm favourite of climbers and mountaineers. In 2015, the collection of durable and weather-beating jackets, pants and baselayers was relaunched. This collection of highly durable and very technical kit is perfect if you are heading out into the harsh conditions.
So what's new?
Like many brands, The North Face (TNF) has looked to the athletes and pros who need the top-of-the-range kit to design their collection. They have taken their time to redesign and create what they state is a collection that has been, "re-imagined with cutting-edge innovation and purposeful design”.
The North Face team behind the collection has been guided by a design ethos of "Respect. Inspire. Evolve." Respect for the athlete’s culture and the environment that they play in. It inspires athletes through the products' design, feel and function and it evolves by pushing the limits of innovation and technology.
These are the six layers to the collection, from L1 (inner) to L6 (outer).
L1 Baselayer: The first layer (top and bottoms) are essentials made from engineered fabric to provide zonal warmth and moisture management, while having an articulated construction for easier mobility.
L2 Transitional Layer: A light stretchable midlayer, that'll provide extra warmth. While being insulating, they are also breathable; generally featuring materials such as FuseForm Polartec Hardtec fleece.
L3 Down Midlayer: A secondary midlayer, generally constructed with ultra-lightweight, 800-fill down for further insulation.
L4 Synthetic Midlayer: Synthetic midlayers are a great alternative to down in damp conditions, often featuring ThermoBall insulation that retains warmth when wet.
L5 Shell Layer: Shells are your shield against the elements, offering waterproof and windproof protection. Highly breathable, they can feature up to three layers of GORE-TEX Membrane.
L6 Outer Warmth Layer: An essential for tough conditions, the outermost insulation for extreme conditions is a heavy down jacket, designed for belaying or rest periods.
