Berghaus History – An Interview with Maude & Chris Tiso

2 min read

This week we celebrate our co-founder, Maude Tiso, reaching the remarkable milestone of ninety.

Born on the Isle of Eigg in 1935, Maude developed an early interest in the Scottish mountains - an interest that quickly grew into a lifelong passion for climbing, exploration, and conservation. We want to celebrate and thank Maude for her remarkable contribution to the Scottish outdoor community.

Dip into our history in this interview with our co-founder Maude and CEO Chris as they reflect on Tiso’s relationship with the well-renowned brand, Berghaus. Two quintessentially British brands, working together with shared ambitions of innovation and high-quality products for customers who call even the harshest of outdoor environments their home.

Listen along as Maude takes us through her and Graham’s experience with the co-founders of Berghaus – Peter Lockey and Gordon Davidson, from vegetarian dinner parties to the first women’s specific boot in the outdoor market. Two brands with two co-founders, something that set their companies apart in a market where businesses were usually headed up by one male outdoor enthusiast.

Chris reflects on the partnership Tiso has established with Berghaus over the years; Tiso being one of the first businesses to stock Berghaus products, helped further by Graham Tiso’s reputation in mountaineering to establish Berghaus as a reputable outdoor gear brand even in the harshest of Scottish environments. In more recent years, Berghaus has become an avid partner of the John Muir Trust and our Connect Outdoors initiative, bringing together and empowering underrepresented social groups.
