What are the different types of 3-man tents?

Backpacking tents

A 3-person backpacking tent should be lightweight yet robust and dependable. These tents allow you to venture onto the path less trodden and into the wild. They're often geodesic or tunnel-shaped, offering superior stability and wind resistance. If you're looking for something to complete your biggest adventures yet, we'd recommend looking at our selection of MSR tents.

Adventure tents

Whether it's your first wild camping trip or a weekend in the Cairngorms, make it memorable with an adventure-ready 3-man waterproof tent. You never know what conditions you'll be up against when you go camping in the UK, so it's best to be prepared. With ample space for you and your camping buddies, a 3-person tent offers comfort and practicality – and could still be small enough to carry between you in your rucksacks, too.

Family tents

For a family camping trip, your choice of tent needs to be just right. If you're worried about the time it takes to pitch your tent and pack it away again, a 3-man pop-up tent could be the most convenient choice. They're not ultra-technical but they're a cost-effective choice for summer festivals and no-nonsense holidays with the kids! Family tents are spacious enough to store your cooking equipment and other important camping gear, too.

Flysheet

The flysheet is the fabric layer on the outside of the tent. It's responsible for keeping you dry and protected against the elements. In 3-person camping tents, flysheets might not be as technical as those you'd find on an ultralight one-person tent.

Hydrostatic Head (HH) rating

Hydrostatic Head indicates how waterproof a 3-man tent will be. While every tent in our selection is built to keep you dry through a shower or two, it's worth looking for a higher rating if you're heading out into the wild – especially in Scotland! If you're looking for something technical, you'll find the highest ratings on technical 2-man tents.

The minimum rating you'll see on a waterproof tent is 1000mm HH. If you're going wild camping or you expect to be out in the rain, try to look for more. The higher the Hydrostatic Head rating, the better protection you have from driving rain.

Poles

Different brands of tents produce their own poles, too. These are responsible for the structural integrity of the tent, so it goes without saying that they're pretty important. Poles could also influence the weight, durability and cost of your new 3-man tent, so they're worth knowing about. Poles are generally made using one of two materials:

  • Aluminium: The strongest, lightest pole material. Typically seen in lightweight 3-person tents for backpacking and wild camping.
  • Fibreglass: Used in budget options. They're cheap to replace but may break or snap under pressure or in very strong winds.

3-man tent shapes

There are a few different shapes and structures of 3-person tents on the market. Unless you're camping in extreme conditions, it's unlikely that the shape of your tent will affect your experience using it. Whether for comfort or practicality, there are several reasons why you might prefer one shape over another. The most popular 3-man tent structures include:

Tunnel tents

Tunnel tents make a great choice for large groups and families who need a lot of headroom! This structure is popular in 3-man tents and bigger models, too, especially those manufactured by Berghaus. There are some high-end tunnel tents, offering maximum practicality and durability, but you'll also find some budget-friendly options.

Dome tents

Dome 3-person tents are those with poles that cross over in the middle, forming a spacious inner tent. They make popular choices for family camping and wild camping alike. If you need a generously sized tent that won't let you down, it's worth choosing one with technical materials too. Larger three-person dome tents often come with a front porch area to store your camping gear and muddy boots.

Pop-up tents

If you're planning a short camping trip with your family or in a small group, a pop-up 3-person tent could be a perfect choice. With a coiled frame, this type of tent pops into shape and makes for super-speedy pitching. The time and energy they save you could pay dividends – especially if you're only staying for one night, perhaps at a party or festival. Just remember that they're not as waterproof as other options.
