What is a windbreaker jacket?

Sometimes known as a windshell, a windproof or 'windbreaker' jacket is one specifically designed to keep you warm and sheltered. On winter walks under crisp, clear skies, your windbreaker can be worn as an outer layer to keep the warmth close to your body.

Our range of windbreaker jackets for women includes many different styles. From lighter shells for walking and hiking to insulated options for skiing, there's a windbreaker for every niche.

We understand that finding a sustainable option can be difficult when you're buying windproof gear. With our Think Green label, we've made it easy for you to spot brands using eco-friendly fabrics and technologies. Together, we can be kinder to the planet.

Are windbreakers waterproof?

If you're thinking of buying a ladies' windbreaker jacket, it's important to know that it serves a different purpose to your waterproofs. Windbreaker jackets are designed to keep you warm, not dry.

They're usually manufactured with soft, synthetic fibres on the inside and a technical windproof membrane on the outside. Some windproof jackets feature water-resistant outer fabrics, too, but this technology is only designed to withstand light showers and splashing mud – not heavy, driving rain.

There are a few exceptions. If you see a windbreaker with Gore-Tex on the label, its outer membrane will be fully waterproof, windproof and breathable.

Can you wear a windbreaker in summer?

Yes! Wearing your windproof jacket with just a light T-shirt or tank top underneath it makes a wonderful choice in mild but breezy weather. During late autumn evenings by the lake or just as the sun starts to set on the hillside, a ladies' windbreaker makes an excellent choice to stay comfortable.

How do windbreakers work?

Windproofing is an essential technology for outdoor enthusiasts.

Unless you've chosen to, you're unlikely to be exploring in the pouring rain all day. Having a breathable windproof layer is essential for everyday adventures, whether you're going on an alpine hike or just nipping to town.

Technical ladies' windbreakers use specialist, tightly woven fabrics to keep cold draughts out. Many are still breathable, though, so you won't feel too hot while you're wearing it either. Some manufacturers use specialist outer membranes. A few examples include:

  • Polartec Windpro, a wind-resistant and durable fabric, made using tight yarn to stop wind chill in its tracks.
  • Pertex Weave, a tightly woven fabric layer with fast-drying, moisture-wicking ability for total protection.
  • GORE-Windstopper, a branded microporous polyurethane layer applied between the inside and outside of a windbreaker to make it windproof.

How should you layer a windproof jacket?

In freezing cold conditions, you should layer your jacket to maximise its performance. You can use the following suggestions as a starting point:

  • A thermal base layer goes first. Depending on which you find most comfortable, you can choose between short- and long-sleeve options.
  • Your next layer should be a cosy fleece. Half-zip options mean you can adjust your temperature on the move.
  • Lastly, your windproof jacket should be your outer. If it's likely to rain while you're out, it's always worth packing your waterproofs.

Do you need a windproof shell for camping?

If you're going camping, packing a windproof jacket is a brilliant idea. These practical shells make a versatile and lightweight addition to your rucksack, so you'll hardly notice it when you're on the move.

While you're setting up your tent, wearing a windbreaker will keep you protected against the elements and focused on the task at hand. In the evening, you can rely on your jacket to keep you cosy through the cooking sessions as you huddle round the fire.

No matter the season, we always recommend windproof jackets for camping.

How should my windbreaker jacket fit?

When it comes to a technical windbreaker jacket, women's models tend to be optimised for active days out. You should be able to walk, run and jump freely in your windbreaker.

If you try on a windbreaker in-store, you should also make sure that you can lift both arms up above your head. It shouldn't be oversized but it needs to be loose enough to fit your midlayer and base layer underneath it.
