GORE-TEX Care

Have you got a GORE-TEX Brand but you don't know how to clean it? Check out our step by step guide. #MyTiso #GORETEX

Gore-Tex is the ultimate defence against wet weather. But did you know that in order to keep them performing to their full potential, it's essential to clean them? This rids the Gore-Tex material of dirt and sweat that inevitably builds up over time.

In Emilia’s case, her jacket was relatively new, but after a trip to Iceland and lots of days in the Scottish hills, it was already starting to show signs of dirt around the cuffs and on the front of the jacket. It's preferable to wash it sooner rather than later, as letting more dirt build up over time makes it harder to restore performance.

We recommend machine washing. It might sound scary putting an expensive jacket in your washing machine, but it's a simple and straightforward process.

Step one - make sure everything is removed from your pockets. You don’t want anything in your pockets that could damage your jacket, or your machine. Then, ensure all pockets and other zips are closed. Next up, loosen your cuffs and any elastics at the hood and hem.

In this case, we are using Granger's Performance Wash, but you can use any non-biological liquid detergent. Do not use pods, powder, or fabric softener. Add half a cap per item of clothing being washed to the detergent section of your machine’s drawer. It’s recommended not to wash more than two garments at the same time. Wash on a regular cycle at no higher than 40 degrees Celsius.

Once washed, it’s time to dry. In the summer and in drier climates, you can line dry your jacket. However, to re-activate the Durable Water Repellent (DWR) coating of your jacket, we need to add heat. We advise putting your jacket in the dryer on a medium heat, checking intermittently until dry. This dries and reactivates the DWR in your jacket at the same time. If you opted to line dry your jacket, it is still advised to put it in a dryer for a short period to re-activate.

Over time, the DWR will become reduced. To replenish, products can be added at the washing stage, such as Grangers Repel plus.

As Emilia demonstrates in the video, once dry, the jacket beads water like brand new!
