Jack Wolfskin Jasper 3 in 1 Jacket - Tested by Tiso Ambassador Tristan Cameron-Harper

The Review

New in for Tiso this winter is the Jack Wolfskin Jasper 3 in 1, a best-selling jacket for the brand.

This versatile piece can be worn in three different arrangements to suit all weather conditions experienced on a day out in the hills. On a recent microadventure to the Isle of Bute we asked Tiso ambassador Tristan Cameron-Harper to test out this jacket, to put it through its paces and let us know what he thought.

The Features

The Jasper 3 in 1 jacket is essentially three different layer systems brought together in one jacket. It has an outer hardshell waterproof and windproof jacket and an inner fleece jacket. These two can be worn separately or combined via a built in system zip.

The outer hardshell of this jacket is completely waterproof, it has a water column test rating of 10,000mm. The water column test is an industry standard for rating the waterproofness of outdoor garments. The test involves a column of water 1’’ in diameter filled with water, the fabric to be tested is pulled taught under the column of water. Over a 24 hour period it is tested for how many millimetres of water the fabric can withstand before water seeps through. In testing the Jack Wolfskin Jasper withstood 10,000mm high column of water, it is a highly waterproof jacket. This level of waterproofing is achieved through the use of Texapore fabric, the version Jack Wolfskin have opted to use is surprisingly soft and quiet, there is no rustling noise which is often experienced with hardshell jackets.

The inner jacket of this system is the Jack Wolfskin Nanuk 200 fleece. A warm and robust insulation layer that can easily be attached to the outer hardshell to create a warm, waterproof and windproof jacket.

The Verdict

Tristan says:

‘’I love this jacket! I wore it for two days on our Isle of Bute microadventure, I cycled in it, I hiked in it and set up camp in it. Over the two days the weather was quite kind to us, however it was in November on a Scottish Island so it did get chilly especially at night. With its inner fleece and windproof outer the Jasper 3 in 1 kept me very warm. We experienced one huge rain shower when we were out on a hike, we were still about 2 miles from the car so I got pretty soaked. But getting back to the car my fleece underneath the hardshell was completely dry, this jacket is super waterproof! I would definitely recommend the Jasper 3 in 1 to anyone after a waterproof and warm hiking jacket!’’
