Overview

The Jack Wolfskin Sierra Trail jacket is marketed as an ultra-lightweight waterproof jacket made from 100% recycled fabric including the outer fabric, membrane and lining aimed towards use in milder weather conditions.

I have tested this jacket in the wind and rain on Ben Ledi, to shelter me from the wind after swimming out in Loch Lubnaig and also around the city during the recent rainy days and thunderstorms. So far, I have been more than impressed with the jacket's weather protection, comfort and appearance.

Features

The Sierra Trail jacket features Jack Wolfskin's Texapore Ecosphere fabric. This means that unlike many weatherproof jackets, the outer fabric, membrane, and lining are made from PFC free, 100% recycled materials.

The jacket has articulated sleeves with ventilation zips located around the back of the arm rather than directly over the pits in order to increase the available range of movement. The cuffs are elasticated, although there is no way to loosen them if you like the option of increasing air flow through your sleeve.

There is a chin guard and an adjustable hood to keep your head snug in more breezy conditions.

Verdict

The Sierra Trail has kept me satisfyingly dry during the recent late spring downpours and thunderstorms. In the wind and rain on Ben Ledi, I felt comfortable and protected whilst being active, with the pit zips helping to prevent me from overheating.

I found the chin guard and adjustable hood to be comfortable and offered good protection in the rain, although I think I'd want a bit more protection for winter conditions in the hills.

The jacket looks good too and its light weight and compact size makes it easy to keep handy in your day pack.

The use of less raw materials and the lack of harmful PFC plastics in the production of this jacket is a huge bonus and will certainly give peace of mind to the more environmentally-conscious. I'm certainly looking forward to getting more out of this jacket over the coming summer months.
