Salewa Alpine Trainer Mid GTX - Tested By Tiso - Review By Mollie Hughes

The Review

Salewa footwear has always been popular with our customers at Tiso. So you can imagine our excitement at the arrival of the new Salewa Alpine Trainer Mid GTX."

I was asked to test these boots out, to put them through their paces and work out just how suitable they would be for our customers. I headed to Glencoe and spent the day in these boots walking through bogs and rivers, scrambling up rock and climbing Munros. Hiking boots are usually specific to a certain foot shape. If you have a wide foot you may gravitate to a certain brand or style and similarly if your foot is narrow only certain shapes and brands will fit you. However, the Salewa Alp Trainer Mid is designed to fit a large variety of different foot shapes. Salewa have achieved this with two great features.

The Features

The first is the Multi-Fit Footbed Plus (MFF+), this consists of two insoles attached with Velcro. These insoles let you adjust the boots volume by keeping or removing the bottom layer. For me, with both insoles in the boot they were too snug and I knew after a couple hours of hiking my feet would swell slightly and the boots would become uncomfortable; but by changing the bottom insole these boots fitted perfectly.

The second feature that make these boots such a great fit is the lacing system. Just like a climbing shoe, these boots lace right down to the toe. This gives you the ability to get a precise fit by loosening or tightening the lacing in the area you need.

The Salewa Alp Trainer Mid also comes with a Gore-tex Extended Comfort lining, these boots are waterproof and also extremely breathable. Arriving back at the car after ten hours in these boots, walking through bogs, mud, and as you will see from the pictures, rivers, I was happy to find that my feet remained dry.

The Verdict

I have always believed that the measure of a good boots is that you don’t notice them. That you have the freedom to hike, to jump, to balance and to enjoy your day without thinking about what’s on your feet. This was the case with the Salewa Alp Trainer Mid. These boots seemed to take no breaking in, they were as comfy at the start of the day as they were at the end of the day!

For the Autumn/Winter season Tiso are stocking a range of Salewa boots. These includes one of our best-selling boots, the Salewa Mountan Trainer Mid, the big sister/brother of the Alp Trainer Mid, it has a stiffer sole and a suede leather upper ideal for scrambling and Via Ferratas. The range also includes two fantastic mountaineering boots, the Raven 2 GTX a lightweight mountaineering boot and the new Vultur Vertical GTX, a B3 rated boot for steep ice and mixed climbing.
