The North Face Men's Trevail Hoodie, Tested by Tiso Staff - Aaron Hodgson, Tiso Edinburgh Outdoor Experience Store - Sales Assistant

The Review

The North Face Trevail series are down-filled powerhouses designed for all-round winter use. I initially tested this hooded jacket walking in the Pentlands in late September, before taking it to Glencoe in early October for a day’s climbing. Ultralight and compressible but loaded with 800 fill goose down, the Trevail Hoodie is a must-have item for any cold-weather activity where layering for warmth is essential. Its thoughtful design offers excellent protection from light moisture and when its blowing a hoolie, with the internal elastic cuffs and a hem cinch cord helping to lock in even more warmth whether you’re scrambling up Curved Ridge on Buachaille, belaying on Rannoch Wall, or running over the Aonach Eagach.

The Features

Down Fill – the Trevail Hoodie is ultralight and compressible, yet packs 800 fill responsible goose down, making it a must-have for any excursion where layering for warmth is essential. By trapping your body heat, this jacket ensures your temperature stays consistent no matter how cold it gets on the trail or in the mountains.

Water resistant –The face of the fabric is treated with a durable water repellent (DWR) to provide the first line of defence against wet weather. The bound hood offers further protection, while the internal elastic cuffs and hem cinch cord not only help to keep heat in but also the Scottish rain out, which can so often feel like it is blowing up from the ground rather than the down from the sky.

Added Features – An internal chest pocket lets you stash small essentials, and the Trevail Hoodie can be stowed in its own pocket when you don’t need it. There are also secure-zip hand pockets to ensure you can have snacks nice and handy when you’re out in the hills or at the crag.

The Verdict

The Trevail Hoodie is a light-weight, weather-resistant down jacket designed for use in situations where warmth, weight, and packability are prime concerns. It will be an important layering piece for walkers and climbers in Scotland this winter, keeping you warm when the weather gets cold. Furthermore, the bright arrowwood yellow colour on the body (with asphalt grey arms and hood) means that this adaptable jacket can be worn as a standalone lifestyle piece and will also ensure you can be seen out in the hills, when navigating challenging terrain. I have no hesitation recommending this versatile jacket to our customers this winter.
