About The Domane:
Trek's Domane has been the king of comfort for many seasons, but this 2020 model has really taken it to new heights.
Trek have re-built the Domane from the ground up to include many impressive features, but first and foremost, the Domane has always been about comfort. Isospeed technology de-couples the seat tube from the frame to provide a degree of flex. This provides an astonishing level of comfort which really transforms riding on rough or gravel roads. Speaking of gravel, the new Domane has clearance for up to 38c tyres, allowing it to be a road race weapon one moment, and and gravel grinder the next. Larger volume tyres also add a large amount of comfort and traction for an un-paralleled smooth ride.
Up front, Isospeed appears again to smooth out the bumps between road and handlebar, dissipating vibrations before they reach the handlebars. The Domane's party piece though is found on the down tube. A neat internal storage compartment works to fit all the tools and spares you need right under the bottle cage. A sleek hidden lever allows easy and quick access (no tools required) and the neoprene sleeve ensures no rattling. Seriously, it's so neat you'll wonder why we haven't had these on bikes for years.
The frame itself is built from Trek's OCLV carbon fibre and shaves weight at every possible area. The Domane might be about comfort and endurance riding, but don't go thinking it's a heavy plodder. In the right hands on the right terrain it's just as much a race weapon as their Madone and Emonda bikes. The geometry is neutral without being too aggressive, but it's happy for you to put the hammer down, or sit and smoothly rack up the miles. Plus, you're covered by Trek's lifetime guarantee, so the Domane really can be a bike for life.
Impressed yet? We certainly are, and it just gets better with the SL 4 specification. A full Shimano Tiagra 10 speed groupset provides 20 super smooth gears in a wide range suitable for both long gravelly miles and fast chainganging with your local club. A Praxis T47 bottom bracket is a stiff and reliable choice that will keep spinning smoothly through many miles and all conditions, a big improvement over previous press-fit units. For the wheels, Trek have used their own Bontrager Affinity wheelset with wide 32c R1 tyres. It's a light and smooth spinning combo, with the chunky tyres at home on the road and well protected against punctures. The SL 4 is completed with a range of great Bontrager components with smart VR-S bars sized to suit each frame size, Blendr compatible stem (perfect if you use a Garmin computer etc as it allows almost invisible mountaing options) and a performance Arvada saddle.
This season, the Domane really has knocked our socks off. It's gained both outright speed on the road, lost weight, gained comfort, and is more versatile than ever. And with the BITS storage system, it's more practical too. If you ride on the road and value the ability to clock up the miles, as well as turn it up for short efforts AND keep going when the road runs out, there really is no bike like the Domane.
