The ETI was founded in 1998 and works to improve working conditions in global supply chains by implementing their Base Code of labour practice, which is based on the UN’s International Labour Organisation’s (ILO) standards. They work from nine principles: employment is chosen; freedom of association and the right to collective bargaining are respected; working conditions are safe and hygienic; child labour shall not be used; living wages are paid; working hours are not excessive; no discrimination is practised; regular employment is provided; no harsh or inhumane treatment is allowed. Their remit is vast and cover industries from apparel to food and agriculture.
