Keen's iconic men's hiking boot brings an updated look for 2020 for all-terrain adventures. The Targhee III Mid WP has the fit, durability, and performance of the award-winning Targhee waterproof boot, but its rugged looks have been taken to a whole new dimension.
The Targhee III Mid WP boots have been consciously created. One of the ways is by using envirnmentally preferred leather. Due to the fact that tanning leather is a dirty process, Keen source their hides from Leather Working Group-certified tanneries that use processes to reduce chemical use and the impact on our watersheds.
Another way is through the use of a PFC-free water repellency - Perfluorinated Chemicals (PFCs) are commonly used as a durable water repellent on outdoor gear and footwear. But these compounds are suspected carcinogens, degrade very slowly and persist in the environment, so Keen have switched to alternative chemistry that’s safe yet still effective.
The final way is through Cleansport NXT, as Keen have turned to nature to eliminate pesticides and biocides from going into the environment. the insoles are infused with microbes, which lay dormant and invisible in the material of the product, and when they come in contact with sweat they are activated and reduce the odour.
The removable dual-density EVA insoles deliver comfort and arch support, whilst the Keen.Dry waterproof and breathable membrane keeps outside moisture at bay while allowing inside moisture to escape.

We know our customers like to know exactly what they're buying; we're not going to sugar coat it, but we are going to explain it. We've divided up all of the sustainable features we've identified across our product ranges and grouped them into three so you know how your purchase is making an impact: Think Nature, Think Welfare, Think People.
The Keen Men's Targhee III Mid Waterproof Walking Boot has the following sustainability attributes...
The way that we look after our clothes once we take them home can make a big impact, and this includes how often we wash them. Skipping just one out of ten washes leads to a reduction in total toxicity, lower CO2 emissions, and the release of fewer microplastics. Odour control technologies like POLYGIENE and naturally odour resistant fabrics like merino wool can help to reduce the number of times that we wash a garment by keeping it fresher for longer, in turn making it last longer.
Leather production has a significant impact on the planet, using excessive amounts of water and polluting it with harmful chemicals. Certain organisations and producers are making efforts to reduce the environmental impact of leather production on the planet, such as non-profits like the Leather Working Group, who have been auditing the leather manufacturing process from tanneries to retailers since 2005, and Perwanger, a quality leather producer prioritizing the environment
Products using natural fibres can range from cotton to wool to hemp and silk - but by being naturally made, they will also naturally biodegrade at their end of lifecycle. Even if you have a natural fibre product, it can probably still be recycled or repurposed before being disposed of. However, if it truly has reached the end of its use, natural fibres need air to biodegrade so please don't dispose of them in landfill.
Fluorinated DWR finishes make clothing waterproof by repelling water droplets. ‘PFCs’ is the broad term for all fluorocarbon chemicals, of which PFOS and PFOA are sub-groups. Different chemicals in this family have a varying number of carbon atoms, so C6 has six carbon atoms and C8 has eight. While the outdoor industry has moved away from C8 (or 'long chain') PFCs, C6 (short chain) PFCs are currently unbeatable in their waterproofing performance. They're considered less harmful to the environment than C8, but they have not been proven to be safe. PFCs are known as forever chemicals; once created they will never break down and are harmful to people and the planet. To read more about the chemistry related to PFCs, head here.
PFC-Free DWR uses alternative, biodegradable technologies that repels water from the surface of a fabric - such as Fjallraven's Greenland Wax. PFC-Free DWR coatings are water resistant enough for most daily activities, so if you don’t need a highly technical waterproof, consider a PFC-Free garment instead.
This brand ensures that the factories they use have been third party audited but are not specifically partnered with a Non-Profit Organisation. This will be either BSCI (Business Social Compliance Initiative) or SMETA (Sedex Members Ethical Trade Audit), which are social auditing methologies and reports but are not an accreditation. This means the brand has sourced factories who have passed an audit, so their worker rights, environmental impact and social compliance is up to scratch.

Bought these a few weeks ago and have worn them most days on the hills and mountain tracks. Wide fitting which I needed. Very comfortable from the outset. I would definitely buy these again.
Bought a pair of these last year in September. Very comfortable wide fitting boot. Great looks but the glue gave way near the toe too quickly, started ripping apart and now they're no good
Unsuccessfully puts style above good design, for example with sewn seams in the upper exactly where the boots will flex most behind the oddly-shaped toe-box. Neither v wide nor v comfortable.
Well constructed from good quality materials. Great fit for wide feet, comfortable to wear, 3 season boot for everything but the most severe conditions.
Very comfortable but poor quality
