MY FAVOURITE THINGS...

The wild camping season has well and truly started following a spell of spectacular spring weather. Here’s a selection of favourite equipment from Chris who knows better than most that good gear choices can make the difference between an uncomfortable and enjoyable night under canvas…

Chris Tiso is CEO of Tiso Group, President of Scouts Scotland and has been on expeditions all over the world. He grew up camping in Scotland.

TENT // For expeditions involving snow and high winds I swear by The North Face VE 25 – mine have seen service in the Himalayas and Antarctic and are still going strong. They are simply bullet proof. Here in Scotland I can’t see past Hilleberg – their design and construction quality are both excellent. My favourite model (and the one that sees the most action) is the Nallo 2 GT. Its quick and easy to put up even in poor conditions or light, comfortably accommodates two and the large porch is great for cooking, storing kit and acts as a kennel for our dogs at night!

STOVE // The MSR Pocket Rocket is a brilliant piece of design. Its real beauty lies in its simplicity – safe, compact, super light and easy to use. What’s not to like?

FOOD // Expeditions and backpacking necessitate dried food, usually due to weight considerations. If this is less of a concern we will usually sacrifice a lighter load for the enjoyment of a Wayfarer Meal – my wife happily eats the chicken curry for breakfast, lunch and dinner when wild camping!

SLEEPING BAG // What season you are camping in largely dictates what bag you take so it’s difficult to single out a favourite model. As a brand manufacturer, Rab pretty much cover all the bases for me. The variety of fill weights across the range can accommodate any temperature you are likely to encounter in Scotland.

ROLL MAT // Things have moved on a lot from the first generation inflatable mats which revolutionised comfort under canvas. What hasn’t changed in my view is that Thermarest are still the leader – their lightweight range in particular provides phenomenal insulation and cushioning for such a light and compact bit of kit.
