The most important, single mountain skill you need to know is how to navigate when it matters. Coping with winter White-Outs with confidence is a huge challenge for anyone.
This course will concentrate on how to use your equipment, calculate risk and make the right decisions to safely travel in winter conditions. To do this wisely we recommend learning and improving your skills and knowledge.
This course covers the following topics.
Planning a winter trip, the importance of weather and avalanche forecasts
Be avalanche aware when walking on snow covered terrain
Choosing routes from car park to summit’s
Selecting a compass and map type and protecting your map from the elements
Learn to map set and interpret contour lines to terrain features
Learn to make adjustment along your route using micro features
Learn relocation techniques
Know how and when to use your compass
Battery based navigation technology when and when not to use it
Explore a range of navigation techniques and knowing which techniques to use and when
Know how to deal with an emergency
